Crows and Ravens
Lassen Mural Under the 405 freeway, North Hills, California
Unfortunately crows and ravesn are misunderstood and are associated with
superstitious myths that promote
negativitiy, which is prevalent in our Western culutre. The fact is crows
and ravens are one of the most intellectually
evolved birds, they are playful, enjoy singing and have a complex social
life. Crows belong to the Corvid family and are
plentiful in the San Fernando Valley. Sadly, Hawaii's Crow are near distinction.
The Lassen murall depicts crows and ravens in a playful yet profound
manner, while showing their importance to American Indian culture.
The north side demonstrates the dancing, stomping feet of a Hopi American
Indian with a crow imitating the movements, or is it the other
way around? The south side of the mural shows an Alaskan inspired totem
and sculpture representing the ravens. The mural is
approximately 7ft tall and 165ft long, and is painted on both the north
and south sides of the freeway underpass.
This mural was painted by local community members and students from Monroe
High School, under the direction of Michelle Obreogn.
The project was sponsored by the Deveonshire Police Department.
